Rock Climbing on Safari !
Rock-climbing while on a Karisia Mobile safari or while at Tumaren camp has become a very popular activity among young and old. We can guide any age and the routes can accommodate any level of experience.
All the climbs are ‘Top-rope’ climbs, anchored and equalized between paired bolts. The different crags where we climb are conveniently placed along many of our favorite walking routes and they combine well with a day trip, a multi-day trip or an excursion from Tumaren to Sundowners or a bush breakfast. The beauty of our rock climbing is the landscape and the beautiful wild country that surrounds the kopjes where we climb. We routinely have elephants, giraffe and other plains game visible at the base of the climbs and we also regularly flush leopards and striped hyenas as we approach the rocks. We also regularly audit ourselves, our guides and our setup with outside specialists and we take safety extremely seriously. In fact, we would argue that this kind of rock climbing is among the safest things you can do on safari. Read more about all our routes on the thecrag.com where all the routes as well as their grades are listed. Also below some pics of all abilities enjoying some Karisia rock-climbing. Please let us know if you are coming on safari and you have a specific interest in climbing some rocks!

Do you need experience?
No, anyone can climb.
Is there an age limit?
No, people of any age can try.
How do you manage safety?
We have been trained to guide rock climbing by the pros at African Ascents and each year we are audited by Ella Wright who checks our gear and insures all our guides are using the right language and directions to communicate safely what is happening.
Where is all your gear from?
All our climbing gear is purchased in USA and Europe. We use only the best leading brands with records of perfect safety.
What is top-roping?
The majority of the climbing we do is top-roping. That is when a guide reaches a paired set of anchors at the top of a certain climb and strings a rope through an equalized rigging. The rope then typically comes to the floor on both ends where the guide belays from one side, taking up slack while the climber, who is tied to the other side climbs up on a tight rope. This means a fall only results in a very short drop, typically only inches.
Can you climb in the middle of a Walking Safari?
Yes, just tell your guide and he can figure out what days will be best.
