Karisia Walking Safari
2 Nights Mobile, 1 Night Tumaren Camp
Larai
Day 1
Larai Camp:
Our safari will begin on the Ewaso River in a shady camp we call Larai, Masai for the Yellow Fever Trees that are common there. At Larai your guide will outline the daily routine for the days ahead which includes waking early, enjoying a healthy and hearty breakfast before walking to the next camp before lunch. The main team of camels carry the gear on the most direct route while a few others will accompany the walkers, carrying extra bags, snacks and water. These camels are also outiftted with riding saddles should anyone want to try a camel game-drive.
Paul’s Rock
Day 2
Paul’s Rock:
From the river we will walk east, looking for tracks and spotting game. The terrain is mixed Acacia bush interspersed by ancient granitic rock kopjes, excellent for gaining a view of the wildlife that is around. Besides sign of animals we will pass the remains of people that once called this area home. Graves of a people who occupied the area before the Masai as well discarded rock tools and shards of broken pottery. Walking in the area surrounded by this long human history one can’t help but sense our own beginnings amidst this great landscape and beside this same great mega fauna. Rock climbing is an option at Paul’s rock and we have all the gear to accommodate several climbs with sundowners at the top.
Loseramoru
2nd December
Loseramoru:
From Paul’s rock we will be heading south toward another proud kopje standing tall over bushlands below. The granitic rock here is over 800 million years old and was formed under the ground without oxygen when all the continents were together. These remaining rocky hills are all that remains of mountains that once towered as high as the Himalayas but have eroded over all this time. To the west, on the other hand, lies the flat Laikipia plateau that was formed only 12 million years ago from lava overflowing from the splitting rift valley. The geology gives us an additional sense of timefullness and a sense of how much life here has been influenced by these slow-moving but monumental movements of earth.
Nyasura
3rd December
Nyasura:
Nyasura, like our past 2 camps is a rock outcrop of stunning beauty. It lies within a valley rich with plains game as well as predators. The camp is situated not far from the rocks and here again, in the evening, we can try rock climbing or else simply scale the rock to sundowners at the top. Our best opportunities for seeing cats and other predators is often while having drinks on a rock like Nyasura and looking out on the life below.
Tumaren Camp
4th December
Tumaren Camp was originally just the home of James Christian and Kerry Glen (the owners of Karisia Walking Safaris) and it has 6 beautiful outfitted guest tents. Each tent is spacious and overlooks a busy waterhole visited by Elephants, Giraffe, Oryx, Common Zebra, Grevy’s Zebra and warthogs. Guests staying at Tumaren put together each day based on their interest. While the guided walks are the specialty at Tumaren, James, Kerry, Gabriel and the other guides are equally comfortable game-driving for the best game and photographic opportunities. Picnics, brunches and sundowners also feature in each day at Tumaren as well as opportunities to try our excellent rock climbing routes or possibly a trip to the local Masai market if the schedule permits.
