8 NIGHT WALKING SAFARI IN THE MATHEW'S RANGE WITH A NIGHT AT TUMAREN IN LAIKIPIA

13 DECEMBER - 21 DECEMBER 2010

Join us for a trip of a lifetime in a most wild and beautiful corner of a wild and beautiful country. The Mathew’s Range is orientated north-south and is 150 km long. At higher altitudes, the Mathews are forested by a massive virgin forest of Cedar, Fig, and Podocarpus while on its lower slopes grow Phoenix Palms, Croton, Olives and Cycads. Elephants, Buffalo, Bushbuck and countless bird species call the forest home and in the forest there is the chance of seeing a recently discovered population of DeBraza Monkeys, a splendid species thought only to exist west of the Rift Valley. At the lower altitudes exist Greater and Lesser Kudu, Gerenuk, Dikdik, Impala and Reticulated Giraffe. Our walk in the Mathews will take us to the high and the low country including all the habitats in between and the chance of finding predators such as north Kenya’s thriving Wilddogs.

13 DECEMBER: The trip will begin in Nairobi at Wilson Airport where we will board a Safarilink Flight to Nanyuki at 10am. We will be picked up by a Karisia guide in Nanyuki and driven to the beginning of the safari. Our first night will be spent with our entire team of Samburu and Masai guides as well as our team of friendly camels. We will take a small jaunt in the evening to an overlook to find some drinks and celebrate sundown, spot animals and identify our route of the next week of walking.

Each day will begin with warm water brought to your basin beside your tent. You will be woken by someone saying “hodi” which means ‘knock, knock’ in Swahili. After tea/coffee and a light breakfast we will get off to an early start. We typically do all of our walking before afternoon when the sun is at its hottest. While a few camels will accompany us to carry water, snacks and gear, the bulk of the camels and the team will depart on a more direct route to our next camp. This enables us to arrive to an already set camp as well as a delicious lunch. After lunch we usually have a rest or a read for several hours before going on an evening walk for some sundowners and to enjoy a view. After hot showers in the evening we regroup for dinner often times set in a dry river bed or on a moonlight rock.

For six days we will walk south along the eastern edge of the Mathews range, staying in our last camp for two nights so that we can explore some of the high forest above camp or explore low country looking for wildlife. After our last night we will meet our vehicle again and hop in for another beautiful drive south west to our conservation area, Tumaren.
At Tumaren we will walk in dramatically different country with some new species of wildlife and the opportunity to do some mountain biking and rock climbing in addition to walking.

21 DECEMBER: We will drive to Nanyuki to catch the 11am Safarilink flight back to Nairobi.
