James Christian (photography)

James Christian's Mother, Anthea was raised in Kenya on a farm near Nyahururu and his father, Michael, an American, worked for the Kenyan Government in the 1960s after Independance. James has traveled throughout Africa and first visited Kenya when he was only five years old. Since then he has been on safari to all the corners of East Africa and it was his early experiences in Kenya with his parents that lead to his studies in Wildlife Biology and a lifelong passion for animals and ecology.

Education:

1994 The School Of Natural Resources, The University of Vermont Burlington, VT, USA Awarded. Bachelor of Science Degree, May 1994, Major - Wildlife Biology.

Work Experience:

2002 - Fall 2003 Hyla Ecological Services Concord, MA

Wildlife Biologist : Conducting surveys and research with Massachusetts and federally listed species of wildlife. Trapping and radio-tracking spotted turtles, wood turtles and blanding's turtles. Also inventoring four-toed salamanders and blue spotted salamanders populations at various project sites.

Spring / Summer- Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory Brighton, CO.

Field Technician: Conducted surveys of breeding birds by distance sample point counts in The Black Hills, South Dakota.

2001 - 2002 Orca Films, Nevada City

Wildlife Cinematographer: Shot super 16mm footage of Bobcats, California Sealions and Elephant Seals for Doug Bertran of Orca Films.

Spring 2000 / Spring 2001- Paler Graphics San Francisco, CA

Production Assistant : Supporting graphic artist with web production and design. Extensively using Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and Media Cleaner.

Summer 1997 / Spring 2000 - Sharpshin Productions San Francisco, CA

Shot and Co-produced A Brother Returns, a documentary on the release of California Condors in northern Arizona. A Brother Returns was a finalist at The International Wildlife Film Festival. My Footage has appeared on PBS's NATURE, CBS's SUNDAY MORNING, and Gamewarden Wildlife Journal.

Spring / Summer 2000 - The University of California Berkeley, CA

Field Technician: Conducted radio telemetry study of Marbled Murrelets by aerial and truck surveys. Extensive searching through old growth habitat for nests of this poorly understood endangered species.

Spring / Summer 1999 - Kern River Research Center Onyx, CA

Field Assistant: Surveyed for Yellow-billed Cuckoos by song playback. Photographed and inventoried habitats occupied by this sharply declining species.

Spring / Summer 1997 - North Carolina State University Raleigh, NC

Field Assistant: Sampled breeding birds by song in Great Smoky Mountains National Park for Dr. Ted Simons, utilizing distance sample point counts. Performed vegetation sampling and collected Global Positioning Data.

Summer 1995 - The Peregrine Fund, Inc. Boise, ID

Aplomado Falcon Release Attendant: Strengthened radio telemetry skills tracking 17 Aplomado Falcons at a release site in south Texas. Assisted in the observation of the first breeding pair of Aplomado Falcons in the United States since 1952.

Spring 1995 - Hyla Ecological Services Concord, MA

Research Technician: Conducted wetland demarcation, vernal pool certification, wildlife inventories and surveys for state and federally listed species. Conducted a mark-recapture experiment to evaluate the population densities of a protected salamander.

1987 - 1995 Anthea Christian Safaris Concord, MA

Guided clients on safari in Kenya, interpreting the ecology and wildlife for visitors.

Summer 1989 - 1980 - Enchanted Lake Lodge

Guided fly-fisherman in a fly-out fishing lodge in Alaska's Katmai National Park.
